Dr. Kimberly Mayfield

Dr. Kimberly Mayfield is the first African American tenured associate professor and dean of the School of Education at Holy Names University. She is a former special education teacher and has taught and supervised teachers for over 20 years in public and private schools in urban and suburban settings. Dr. Mayfield has a wealth of experience training multiple subjects, single subject, and education specialist mild/moderate teachers. In addition to her extensive experience training teachers for licensure, she has also done workshops as a consultant in the following areas:

Introduction to Special Education, Co-Teaching in the General Education Classroom and Disrupting Disproportionate Representation in Special Education.

Dr. Mayfield is a proud alumna of the University of San Francisco where she earned her masters and doctoral degrees. Dr. Mayfield is a published author. The following titles are examples of her work: Standing on the Rock: An African American Educators Professional Development in Racial and Cultural Competence in the Urban Classroom, Reflections of and Activist in “ Organizing to Change a City” and , “ Teach Tomorrow in Oakland: History, Teacher Profiles and Lessons Learned” in “Diversifying The Teacher Workforce: Preparing and Retaining Highly Effective Teachers” and “The Making of a Black Public Intellectual: A Progressive in the Academy”. Her research interests include creating a permanent diverse teaching force, reducing the overrepresentation of African American males in special education, and increasing daily attendance.


Supporting Special Needs Students Post-COVID

Students with special needs have always required a specialized learning environment to support their success. In this session attendees will engage in a lively discussion about how the pandemic has impacted the education of special needs students. We will discuss how these students experience school post Covid-19 and strategies for re engagement, social emotional learning and increased success.
