Session A

We Are Living a Prototype: Five Ways Design Thinking Helps Us Reconnect with Kids with Dr. Kara Imm

In this session I will position teachers as designers — the creative forces behind routines, rituals, spaces, interactions, tools and learning experiences for kids. I will highlight five important lessons that design thinking gives teachers as we think about creating a space of belonging in the fall. Using video clips, audio interviews, design boards, and prototypes, I will offer vivid examples of how to use parts of the design thinking process in an effort to a) connect with individual students and b) build a welcoming and safe classroom community. All participants will leave with access to a design thinking folder of resources to move forward.

Session B

Counting is More than 1,2,3 with Dr. Nicki Newton

Counting is much more than 1,2,3! Come learn the counting trajectory through songs, poems, videos and hands-on, standards-based, engaging activities. In this session, Dr. Nicki Newton will discuss the 20 research-based developmental trajectory levels of counting and share how to do activities at the different levels. We will look at counting activities in whole group, small group and math workstations. Moreover, we will look at the ongoing cycle of how formative assessments drive our instruction throughout the year.
