3 Sessions @ 12 PM EST
Session A (pre-recorded)
Embedded Teacher Professional Development - A Success Story
P.S. 70 in New York City and CKingEducation partnered to develop an after-school math club with the underlying focus of test-preparation and an overt focus of fun and engagement for students in math. The principal also had a secondary focus of providing professional development to teachers. This conversation is a reflection on the impact of the P.S. 70Q Zoom Math Club for students and participating teachers.
Session B
Universal Design for Learning: Using Evidence Based Strategies to Support Inclusive Practice with Dr. Kristan Rodriguez
In this session, we will explore evidence-based academic strategies using the UDL framework, to address learning loss. According to the Higher Education Act of 2008, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a "scientifically valid framework for guiding educational practice that — (A) provides flexibility in the ways information is presented, in the ways students respond or demonstrate knowledge and skills, and in the ways students are engaged; and (B) reduces barriers in instruction, provides appropriate accommodations, supports, and challenges, and maintains high achievement expectations for all students." Participants in this session will receive an introduction to this brain-based approach and learn how to tap into the recognition, strategic, and affective networks of the the brain. In this interactive session, participants will learn through analogies and activities, and be provided with concrete examples for how to incorporate UDL into their practice.
Session C
Illustrative Math with Karen Deschryver & Mathew Miyashiro from Learn Zillion
The Illustrative Mathematics (“IM”) Certified Experience helps teachers catalyze mathematical proficiency with an engaging and inclusive approach that lifts students up to the skills, understandings, and practices that will stay with them for a lifetime. IM K–12 Math gives you access to engaging content and professional learning and to an inclusive community. Students learn by doing, working their way through problems in both mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language. LearnZillion has partnered with Illustrative Mathematics to develop the first IM-certified curricula for grades K through high school. The program follows IM’s philosophy, sequence, and pedagogy. It’s driven by student discourse and built around focus, coherence, and rigor to equip all students with the skills they need to thrive in mathematics. Teacher support for English learners, students with disabilities, addressing misconceptions, and enriching instruction are embedded at point-of-use throughout every lesson.
