3 Sessions @ 11 AM EST
Session A
Developing Strong Math Identities to Build Capable, Confident & Successful Mathematicians! with Naomi Isaac-Simpson
Have you heard your students say “I’m not a math person?” or “I can’t do that math”? In this session, you’ll learn strategies to ensure overcoming these barriers to cultivate a classroom community where students identify themselves as mathematicians who confidently engage in conjecturing and risk taking. We’ll use strategies to raise the level of engagement and ensure that each student’s voice is represented.
Session B
Math Running Records with Dr. Nicki Newton & Ann Elise Record
Math Running Records is a way to assess overall basic math fact fluency. Known as the GPS of Basic Math Fact Fluency, it is a 3-step interview assessment that looks at accuracy, flexibility, efficiency and automaticity. It gives teachers the evidence they need to provide effective data-driven instruction. Come learn about them through videos and discussion. In this presentation participants will learn what Math Running Records are, how to administer them, how to use the data to plan for fluency instruction and math workstations, how to use the data for fluency routines, how to use the data to inform homework. Through a variety of formats, including discussion, video and interactive practice, participants will see the power of doing Math Running Records.
Session C
The Power of Number Talks with Kathy Richardson & Sue Dolphin
Number Talks is a powerful tool for teaching children, not only that math makes sense, but also to trust their own abilities to make sense of it. Teachers learn how to use models, questions, and multiple experiences to involve children in thinking about numbers and how they work.
Note from Christine King: Kathy Richardson is one of the originators of what we know as Number Talks today. We are so honored that she and her co-author of their newly released book, Number Talks in the Primary Classroom, is going to participate in the Moving Forward Virtual Summit.
